The given equation is
x⁴ + x³ - 4x² + x + 1 = 0
Dividing both sides by x² (x ≠ 0), we get
x² + x - 4 + 1/x + 1/x² = 0
⇒ (x² + 1/x² + (x + 1/x) - 4 = 0
⇒ {(x + 1/x)² - (2 * x * 1/x)} + (x + 1/x) - 4 = 0
⇒ (y² - 2) + y - 4 = 0 [ ATQ ]
⇒ y² - 2 + y - 4 = 0
⇒ y² + y - 6 = 0 ,
which is the required reduced equation.
∴ option (c) is correct.
