Question:

a. In the given figure will the current flow from P to Q, or from Q to P? Why?

b. Redraw the diagram and mark the direction of flow of current.

Answer:

P is a negative terminal of a cell and Q is the positive terminal of cell.

  1. Electronic current flows from P to Q because P has relatively more number of electrons than Q. So, it is at higher potential than Q.
  2. Conventional current flows from Q to P because Q is at higher potential than P.

Remember:

On the conventional basis:

  • Positively charged body is at higher potential.
  • Negatively charged body is at lower potential.

On the basis of electron model:

  • Positive charge body is at lower potential, because of deficiency of electrons.
  • Negatively charged body is at higher potential, because of excess of electrons.

Why current flows and bulb starts glowing?

Ans.

It is because the filament of bulb of resistance for the passage of current. The electric work is done, hence the electrical energy changes into heat energy and light energy. However, this is possible only when the path of an electric circuit is completed. Therefore the circuit given is closed circuit or complete circuit.
