Answer:

Explanation:

Given : R₁ = 7Ω     R₂ = 8Ω   R₃ = 12Ω  V = 6 V

a) R₂ and R₃ are in parallel

∴ Equivalent resistance of R₂ and R₃ is

Rp = R₂R₃/(R₂+ R₃) = 8 x 12 /(8 + 12) = 8 x 12/20 = 24/5 Ω

R₁ and Rp are in series

∴ Equivalent resistance of the combination is

Req = R₁ + Rp = 7 + 24/5 = 59/5 Ω = 11.8 Ω

Total resistance of the circuit = 11.8 Ω

b) Main current in the ckt is

   I = V/R = 6 /(59/5) =30/ 59 A

p.d across R₁ is V₁ = IR₁ = (30/59) x 7= 210/59 = 3.55 V
