Let the numerator be x.

So, the denominator is greater than the numerator by 8= (x+8)

Now, the numerator is increased by 12 =(x+12)

Then the denominator is decreased by 2 = (x+8)-2

=x+8-2

=x+6

Now, the question says that after making these changes, the new rational number obtained = 5/2

So, we get the equation as:-

 = > \frac{(x + 12)}{(x + 6)} = \frac{5}{2}

After doing cross multiplication, we get:-

 = > 2(x + 12) = 5(x + 6)

 = > 2x + 24 = 5x + 30

 = > 2x - 5x = 30 - 24

 = > - 3x = 6

 = > x = - \frac{ 6}{3}

On cancelling the fraction by 3, we get:-

 = >x = - 2

So, the fraction=10/4

So, x=-2

VERIFICATION:-

LHS:-

 = \frac{x + 12}{x + 6}

 = \frac{ - 2 + 12}{ - 2 + 6}

 = \frac{10}{4}

On cancelling the fraction by 2, we get:-

 = \frac{5}{2}

RHS:-

 = \frac{5}{2}

So, LHS=RHS, hence the answer is correct.l, and it is verified.
