Neural tissue:

It is ectodermal in origin.The nervous tissue is made of neurons and glial cells or the supporting cells.

Glial cells of CNS:

  • oligodendrocytes - they form and maintain the myelin sheath around the axons.
  • astrocytes- star shaped cells that form a blood brain barrier
  • ependymal cells- lining the ventricles of brain and spinal cord helping in circulation of CSF.
  • microglia-they are a part of mononuclear phagocytes activatee in case of infection or injury.

Glial cells of PNS:

  • satellite cells-they surround the cell bodies of ganglion they support and regulate the exchange of materials between cytons and icf.
  • schwann cells:they surround the axons.

Thus, neuroglia makes up more than half of the volume of neural tissue
