It is ectodermal in origin.The nervous tissue is made of neurons and glial cells or the supporting cells.
Glial cells of CNS:
- oligodendrocytes - they form and maintain the myelin sheath around the axons.
- astrocytes- star shaped cells that form a blood brain barrier
- ependymal cells- lining the ventricles of brain and spinal cord helping in circulation of CSF.
- microglia-they are a part of mononuclear phagocytes activatee in case of infection or injury.
Glial cells of PNS:
- satellite cells-they surround the cell bodies of ganglion they support and regulate the exchange of materials between cytons and icf.
- schwann cells:they surround the axons.
Thus, neuroglia makes up more than half of the volume of neural tissue
