Direct Speech

When we want to write exactly what someone has said, we use direct speech. The actual spoken words are put within inverted commas (" ) or quotation marks.

"The house is in the village," the traveller said.

Indirect Speech

When we report what someone has said in our own words, we call it indirect or reported speech. Reported speech does not use quotation marks to enclose what the person said. and it does not report what was said word for word.
