ii)Some of this oxygen reacts with the carbon in the graphite to form carbon-dioxide, thus slowly burning away the anodes. Thus, the anodes have to replaced periodically. Here anode is the graphite rod

iii) Cryolite is added to electrolyte to lower the melting point of the mixture and to bring conductivity

iv) The overall reaction is

2Al2O3 + 3C -> 4 Al + 3CO2
