The sports tournament, jousting, was being held in a large field outside the town of Ashby. The opponents waited for the signal to begin. "Let go!" called out the judge. The Knights and the Challengers rushed towards each other and met in the middle with a thunderous sound. But the fight was soon over. The Challengers had an easy win. They struck their opponents to the ground almost at once. A second party of knights fought with the Challengers but they were also easily defeated. There followed a long pause. The f viewers grew impatient waiting for other knights to come forward. The whispers o disappointment grew. "We've come so far to see so little," complained the people. "Young men are not so brave as they used to be, grumbled the old knights.
Suddenly, a trumpet sounded and a young knight came forward mounted on a black horse. Everyone wondered who he was. On his shield was the picture of a tree pulled up by the roots. The unknown knight rode straight to the tent of Bois-Guilbert and struck his shield with the point of his spear. The people fell silent. The trumpets sounded and the judge gave the knights the signal to begin. The two knights galloped towards each other and started the fight with a clash of spears. Both their spears broke and rocked the riders in their saddles but they managed to remain seated.
