Since, x+a is a factor,
putting x = -a will give 0.

1st eq) a^2 + ap + q is 0

2nd eq) a^2 + al + m is 0

2nd eq - 1st eq

= a(l-p) + m -q is 0

so, a is (q-m)/(l-p)

Answer:

=> x + a is the factor.

=> Substituting x = -a will give 0.

=> a^2 + ap + q = 0 [ 1st Equation ].

=> a^2 + al + m = 0 [ 2nd Equation ].

=> Now, 2nd Equation - 1st Equation.

=> a ( l - p ) + m - q = 0.

=> a = ( q - m ) / ( l - p ).
