Two algebric identities will be in this question which are

(x+y)² = x² + y² + 2xy (i)

(x-y)²= x² + y² - 2xy   (ii)

Given

x+ y = 5

xy = 6

Substitute these values in Equation (i)

(5)² = x² + y² + 2(6)

25 = x² + y² + 12

x² + y² = 25 - 12

x² + y² = 13  (iii)

Now to find x-y we will sibstitute (iii) in (ii)

(x-y)² = 13 - 2(6)

(x-y)² = 13-12

(x-y)² = 1

x-y = √1

x-y = 1
