Questions:-

  1. Find No.of neutrons, protons and electrons in  \sf ^{59}_{27}Co [Z = 27 and Atomic mass = 59 amu ] and  \sf {}^{108}_{47}Ag [Z = 47 and Atomic mass = 108 ].
  2. There are two elements . \sf ^{26}{}_{13}A \:\& \:\sf ^{26}{}_{14}B . Find no.of subatomic particles in each and what is relation between these atoms ?
  3. You are given an element X with no.of electrons 8. find;
  • No.of protons
  • Valency
  • Write formula of compound formed when X reacts with (a) H (b) C.

Answers:-

1)

(i) Given:-

Z = 27

A = 59

We know that,

Atomic number is the total number of protons present in an atom. So, Number of protons = 27.

Also,

In an atom;

Number of protons = Number of electrons

27 = Number of electrons

Now,

Number of neutrons (N) = A - Z

So,

⟹ N = 59 - 27

⟹ N = 32

(ii)

Z = 47

A = 108

Here too;

Number of protons = Number of electrons = 47

Now,

⟹ N = 108 - 47

⟹ N = 61

2)

From the given information;

Atomic weight of A (A) = 26 amu

Atomic number of A (Z) = 13

Atomic weight of B (A) = 26 amu

Atomic number of B(Z) = 14

Subatomic particles are nothing but Protons , neutrons and electrons.

In A;

★ Number of protons = Number of electrons = Atomic number

Number of protons = Number of electrons = 13.

★ Number of neutrons (N) = A - Z = 26 - 13 = 13 .

In B;

★ Number of protons = Number of electrons = Atomic number

Number of protons = Number of electrons = 14

★ N = A - Z

⟹ N = 26 - 14 = 12

Relation between A & B:-

A & B are isobars. i.e., They have Same atomic masses with different atomic numbers.

"The nuclides having same atomic mass with different atomic number are called Isobars."

3)

Given:-

Number of electrons in an element X = 8.

(i) We know,

Number of protons = Number of electrons

So,

Number of protons = 8

(ii) Valency is the combining capacity i.e., the number of electrons that are present in the outermost orbit of an element.

Total number of electrons are 8.

So,

It's configuration will be 1s² 2s² 2p

Here, 2nd orbit is the outermost orbit.

Total number of electrons in the orbit = 2 + 4 = 6

We know,

If number of electrons in outermost shell are greater than 4 , then valency = 8 - no.of electrons

So, Valency of X = 8 - 6 = 2.

[ Here , the oxidation state of X will be - 2 ; since no.of electrons > 4 ]

(iii)

We have the valency (combining capacity) i.e., - 2 of X.

(a) X is reacted with Hydrogen (H)

We can find the formula of a compound using the criss cross method.

Using Criss cross method;

 \sf \: H ^{ + 1} \:  \:  \:  {X}^{ - 2}  \\  \\  \implies \boxed{ \sf \:  H_{2} X}

[ ∵ Valency of hydrogen = + 1 ]

Here, the Oxidation state/Valency is negative , that means ; it is a non metal. And , In this case , Hydrogen acts as an electro positive element.

Also,

The atoms of a particular element are increased to make the sum of oxidation states in compound equal to zero.

[ Note:- An electro positive element should be placed before the electro negative atom while writing a formula. ]

(b) X is reacted with C.

Valency of carbon is 4.

Here,

2 atoms of carbon is reacted with one atom of X to make the sum of oxidation states equal to zero.

 \implies \sf \:  {C}^{ +  \cancel{4} \: 2}  \:  \:  \:  {X}^{ - \cancel{2}}  \\  \\ \implies  \boxed{\sf \:CX _{2}}
