1.A peninsula is a piece of land surrounded by water on the majority of its border, while being connected to a mainland from which it extends.

2.A narrow piece of land that connects two landmasses is known as an isthmus. It is generally surrounded by water bodies on two of its sides.    Generally canals are built across isthmuses, as they provide the shortest route for travelling from one water body to the other by sea.
