(a) Force of repulsion happens between both the charges.

(b) Force of attraction happens between both the charges.

Explanation:

Charge is the basic or fundamental property of any matter.

  • An atom has three subatomic particles: proton, electron and neutron. Protons carry unit positive charge and electrons carry unit negative charge, neutrons are neutral in nature.
  • Charge can also be defined as number of protons minus number of electrons.
  • All matter that has charge, also has mass.
  • Type of charge decides the type of force that matter has to experience.
  • There are two types of charges: positive charge and negative charge.

LIKE CHARGES REPEL AND UNLIKE CHARGES ATTRACT.

An atom is negatively charged because it has electrons more than protons. An atom is positively charged because it has protons more than electrons.

  • Now when two equal positive charges are brought together, both have equal number of protons and so, they will repel.
  • But when unlike or unequal charges or one positive and one negative charge is brought together, the one with less electrons will try to acquire more electrons and the one with more electrons will try to donate some electrons. This is why they attract.
