Let 2ˣ = y.

then 2²ˣ + 2ˣ⁺² - 4 * 2³ = 0
        y² +  4 y - 32 = 0       ..... 32 = 8 * 4 ....  8 - 4 = 4...
       (y + 8) (y - 4) = 0
        so  = 4  as    y cannot be negative as  2ˣ is always > 0.
        
So 2ˣ = 4
x = 2.
