HEY MATE!!!

Q. What is PET? Write its uses.

Ans. PET stands for Poly Ethene Tetraphthalate. It's uses are:-

  • It is used for making containers for packaging food and soft drinks.
  • It is used for making magnetic tapes used in audio and video cassette recorders.

Q. Why are the chemicals used in the laboratory stored in plastic containers?

Ans. The chemicals used in laboratory are stored in plastic containers because synthetic plastics are not easily affected by strong chemicals, such as acids and alkalis.

Q. Give two uses of rayon.

Ans. ▪︎It is suitable for wear in summer because its fabric can absorb sweat.

▪︎It is used in making apparels (like dresses, jackets, linings, suits, hats, etc.)

Q. Why electrical wires have plastic covering, and handles of screw drivers are made of plastics?

Ans. Electrical wires have plastic coverings because plastic is a poor conductor of electricity so there are less chances of the person repairing some electrical appliances to get electric current.

Q.5. Ans. Because it is highly elastic, tensile and has silk-like appearance and it is highly durable too.

Q.6. Rayon is obtained by chemical treatment of wood pulp. The raw material , used in the preparation of rayon, is wood cellulose which is a natural fibre. This natural fibre is processed to obtain a silk-like fibre.

Two uses of rayon are:

  • It is suitable for wear in summer because its fabric can absorb sweat.
  • It is widely used in industries; in surgical products and in tyre cords.

Q.7. Some uses of nylon are:

  • It is highly durable. hence its fibres are used for making seat belts, tyre cords, clothes, etc.
  • Nylon is used in many military applications like making ropes, parchutes, etc.

Q.8. Thermosetting plastics:

  • Plastics which have a cross-linked arrangement of molecules, are called thermosetting plastics.
  • These plastics cannot be deformed on heating and therefore, cannot be remoulded again.

Thermoplastics:

  • Plastics which have a linear arrangement of molecules, are thermoplastics.
  • these plastics can be deformed easily on heating and can be remoulded into a new shape.

Q.9. Four disadvantages of this plastics are :

  1. Plastic carrybags and other articles clog the city drainage system, thereby, causing a lot of inconvenience.
  2. Stray cows and other animals, in the process of eating the food waste, may also swallow materials like polythene bags and wrappers. This can choke the digestive tract of animals and can cause their death.
  3. Plastics take several years to decompose; they are not environmental friendly and cause environmental pollution.
  4. plastics, if burnt, produce harmful gases which pollute air.

Q.write one use of following fibres.

a) Rayon:- rayon fabrics are smooth, cool and comfortable . Rayon can be easily dyed in a wide range of colours.

b)Nylon: It is highly elastic, tensile and has silk-like appearance . It is used in making carpets, socks and other hosiery items.

c) Acrylic: These are used for making blankets, which are very light and have quite the same warmth as woollen blankets.
