Question

Raju bought a motorcycle for Rs 36,000 and then bought some extra fittings to make it perfect and good looking. He sold the bike at a profit of 10 % and he got Rs 44,000. How much did he spend to buy the extra fittings made for the motorcycle?

Answer

4,000

Explanation

Let the money he spend on extra fittings be x

We have

Original price of motorcycle = 36,000

S.P. = 44,000

Profit percent = 10 %

Cost price of motorcycle would be 36000 + x (original price + cost of extra fittings)

We know that profit = S.P. - C.P.

⇒ Profit = 44,000 - 36,000 - x

⇒ Profit = 8,000 - x

Now, profit percent = profit/C.P. × 100

Given profit percent = 10

Equating the two, we get

⇒ (8,000 - x)/(36,000 + x) × 100 = 10

⇒ (8,000 - x)/(36,000 + x) = 10/100

⇒ (8,000 - x)/(36,000 + x) = 1/10

Now cross multiplying,

36,000 + x = 10(8,000 - x)

⇒ 36,000 + x = 80,000 - 10x

⇒ 10x + x = 80,000 - 36,000

⇒ 11x = 44,000

⇒ x = 44,000/11

⇒ x = 4,000

Hence, he had spent Rs 4,000 on the extra fittings.
