William Nicholson became the first man to produce a chemical reaction byelectricity on this day in 1800. The English chemist discovered that when leads from a battery are placed in water (H2O), the water breaks up into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) bubbles, which collect separately at the submerged ends of the wires.

In 1800, According to a British chemist, William Nicholson that when electrodes were immersed in water and the current was passed then the bubbles of oxygen and hydrogen was produced. In which oxygen bubbles formed on the electrodes connected to the positive terminal of the battery whereas hydrogen bubbles formed on the negative terminal.
