Pls explain periodic trends class 10
Answers
Answer:
Periodic trends are specific patterns in the properties of chemical elements that are revealed in the periodic table of elements. Major periodic trends include electronegativity, ionization energy, electron affinity, atomic radii, ionic radius, metallic character, and chemical reactivity
Trends in the Modern Periodic Table
Valency
Valency is the combining capacity of an element or a compound. Usually valency is determined by the number of valence electrons in the last shell of the element.
Valency increases down a period and the number of shells increase down a group.
Atomic Size
Atomic Size is the radius of one atom of the element.
Atomic Size decreases down a period because the Nuclear charge across the period increases which tends the electrons to move closer to the nucleus, which reduces the atomic Size.
atomic Size also increases down a group.
Metallic and Non Metallic Character
Metallic character is characterized by the fact that the tendency of an element to lose electrons easily.
Metallic character decreases down a period. Non metallic character increases across a period. Metallic character increases down a group. Non metallic character increases down a group.
No of Groups - 18
No of periods - 7
The Group 1 Elements are called Alkali Metals
The Group 17 Elements are called Halogens
The Group 18 Elements are called Noble gases.
Hope this helps!!!!
