since X has atomix no. 17 so its electronic configuration is 2,8,7
Thus it is placed in group 17 and period 3 of the periodic table.

similarlu the electronic configuration of element Y having atomic mass 20 is 2,8,8,2
Thus its placed in group 2 and period 4 of the periodic table.

Since X has 7 electrons in its last shell so it can gain one electron rather than losing 7 electrons because gaining one electron becomes easier and requires less energy consumption then losing 7 electrons. So it is a non metal.

similarly element while having two electrons in its last shell can lose two electrons rather than gaining 6 electrons because gaining 6 electrons requires more energy than losiing two electrons and so we can classify element Y as a metal.

Since it has 2 electrons in its last shell therefore its oxide will be in the form YO and it will be a basic oxide.
