Before independence, manufacturing industries were located near major cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai. Then many industrial development took place. These places were known as urban centers or cities. These centres were surrounded by agricultural fields.

Explaination

before independence most of the industries are situated near coastal areas like in the cities Mumbai Kolkata Chennai they established in coastal areas because of the trading point of view through overseas

but later on the location changes and now the industries are situated rural agricultural hinterland

Hinterland :areas of a country that are away from the coastal area
