when we lift an object above from the ground,we are said to do some work,the amount of energy that caused the work to be done by us is transferred to the body.. if we have to lift it,minimum required force should be mg, thus w.d=mgh ..gravity is conservative force thus workdone=change in potential energy..

since the w.d=mg x (height).. the potential energy depends on height above the ground.. but remember one thing, potential energy depends on reference frame but change in potential energy between 2 points is independent on reference frame..
