(i)N_3^-

In N_3^-,

V = 5

M = 0

C = 0

A = 3

X = \frac{1}{2}[V+M-C+A]

X = \frac{1}{2}[5+0-0+3]

X = \frac{1}{2}\times 8

X = \frac{8}{2} =4

  • Thus the hybridization of N_3^- is sp^3.

(ii) NO_3^-

V = 5

M = 0

C = 0

A = 1

X = \frac{1}{2}[V+M-C+A]

X = \frac{1}{2}[5+0-0+1]

X = \frac{1}{2}\times 6

X = \frac{6}{2} =3

  • Thus the hybridization of NO_3^- is sp^2

(iii) NO_2^-
