We know that electrons do not follow definite paths in an atom and it is not possible to pin point an electron in an atom .

Under these circumstances , in order to understand the properties of electrons in an atom , a quantum mechanical model of an atom was developed by Erwin Schrodinger .

According to this model of an atom , instead of orbits of Bohr's model , the electrons are thought exist in a particular region of space around the nucleus at a given instant of time called as orbits .

Each orbital of a stable energy for the electron is described by a particular set of quantum numbers .

Quantum numbers are of four types . They are :

1) Principal quantum number

2) The angular - momentum ( or ) Azimuthal quantum number

3) Magnetic quantum number

4) Spin quantum number

1) Principal quantum number is introduced by Bohr . It describes size and energy of main shell .

2) The angular momentum quantum number was introduced by Sommerfeld . It describes the shape of an orbit.

3) Magnetic quantum number is introduced by Landey . It describes the orientation of orbitals .

4) Spin quantum number was introduced by Uhlenbeck and Goud Smith . It describes orientation of spin .
