People are naturally conditioned to avoid pain so they stay in their comfort zones. Comfort zones are different for each person.
Comfort zones are structured around a person's guiding principles.
Your mind will provide thoughts to avoid hard work. Your mental discipline will push you forward. If not, you will do mediocre work or avoid work all together.
In the beginning, tremendous effort is required to step outside of your comfort zone. The process takes a bit of risk and emotional energy to think and take action beyond your comfort zone. Work ethics will challenge your inner conflict to work hard.
In reality, here is what hard work looks like.

A chef prepares his/her recipe starting at point A. Then puts everything together in a dish which is point B. In order to get to the stage before point A, the chef needed to break out of their comfort zone.
A carpenter starts at point A with blueprints/concept in mind and material then finishes a piece of furniture which is point B. Same deal here. The carpenter needed to break free from their comfort zone and make effort to learn about carpentry skills.
An architect starts at point A with conceptual renderings then drafts construction documents to point B. Same story. The architect needed to create a new comfort zone to push forward to acquire the knowledge/degree in order to move from point A to B.
An UFC fighter becomes a skilled competitor when they have acquired a new comfort zone of training the body and mind from point A to point B.
Any worthwhile endeavor requires hard work. The hard work may not look physically enduring but nevertheless any form of success is the result of hard work.

Hard work is when, one is not afraid to continuously stay outside one's comfort zone, yet do what he is passionate about. Even if there are no immediate results to show for the efforts.
Giving it everything we got, if not more, irrespective of external motivation or results, that is hard work.
It is hard, because of the amount of time, energy and dedication one has to put in to get it done.
Only, pitfall is not to climb the wrong mountain. This requires a good mentor or a fair bit of wit and wisdom from our end. Sometimes, both.
Good examples of this are
India's AGNI missile development, a success that came after many failures.Apple's resurrection after having a slew of not so good products in the PC market. ( It stopped climbing the wrong mountain)
The list is big, all things that made history are results of one person's or a group's hard work.
Sacrifice of temporary comfort for a lasting legacy.
Cheers!

In general, hard work is persistence in the face of adversity. That adversity may be physical, mental, social, economic, etc. If you give up when things get tough, you’re avoiding hard work. If you persist in something that is easy and pleasant, the work isn’t hard. You need both continued effort and lack of ease.
Discipline is the ability to take on hard work. It’s the mental fortitude that persuades you that the adversity isn’t so great and persistence is worthwhile.
For me, sales is hard work. It’s exhausting, difficult, and not very satisfying. I’d much rather do manual labor all day.
I’ll also point out that hard work doesn’t necessarily pay off. The difficulties one has to overcome to complete a job often don’t bear much relation to compensation or personal satisfaction. About it’s only virtue is that it builds skills and capacity, which in turn make work less hard. This is one reason why it’s best for people to do jobs that they’re well suited for.
Gary Player says, “The harder you work, the luckier you
get.” It is hundred percent true that there is no substitute for hard work.
Hard work is the first prerequisite to be successful whatever your sphere of
action may be. In the modern terminology we can say the option of success gets
activated only after you have signed in the option @ HARD WORK.
A majority of people believe luck is more important to be
successful in life! Hence, all the problems arise. Lady luck is very loyal to
its commitment to hard work. You cannot woo her without hard work. It has been
seen people generally set out on the journey to success depending upon luck
alone, which is a sheer folly! They end up disappointed and unsuccessful!
On the other hand there is a class of men and women, who
inspired and intrigued by hard work just take up hard work as their modus
operandi to success. Though they sweat and slog along, just a little farther on
the way they realize the blessedness of being industrious. Hard work appears to
be drudgery, but in reality it is sheer blessedness! All the great personages
of all times in all climes have been men and women who worked hard
perseveringly and doggedly.
All great achievers of mankind such as Newton, Leonardo Da
Vinci, Lincoln, Einstein, Addison, Mahatama Gandhi, Dr. Kalam, etc. worked very
patiently and perseveringly in their chosen fields. Success was a blessing in
response to their dedication to their work.
So in order to achieve success, woo the lady luck through
HARD WORK. Depend on HARD WORK, do the WORK passionately, and the lady luck
will smile on you! Success will surely come to those who work hard and who work
untiringly without losing enthusiasm.
