2x² - 8x + 5x - 20 = 0

2x(x - 4) + 5(x - 4) = 0

x - 4 = 0 or 2x + 5 = 0

x = 4 or x = -5/2

Since, the value of x cannot be negative, we consider the value of x to be 4

Son's age

x = 4 years

Father's age

2x² = 2(4)²

2(16) = 32 years

Hence, the present age of son is 4 years and that of father is 32 years.
