QUESTIONS:

1) Define combustion.

2) Define Combustible substance.

3) Define Non - Combustible substance.

4) Define fuel.

5) Define ignition temperature.

6) Define Inflammable substance.

ANSWERS:

1) COMBUSTION:

The process of burning of substance in presence of oxygen(O₂) to release heat and light is called combustion. All combustion reactions are irreversible due to the liberation of heat energy.

\bold{CH_4 + 2O_2\xrightarrow{\quad \quad}CO_2+H_2O}

2) COMBUSTIBLE SUBSTANCE:

Substance which undergo combustion to produce heat are called combustible substances.

Eg. Paper undergoes combustion and produces heat and also carbon-dioxide.

3) NON-COMBUSTIBLE SUBSTANCE:

Substance which doesnot undergo combustion are called non-combustible substances.

Eg. Stone , cement , glass.

4) FUEL:

Fuels are combustible subatance that undergo combustion to produce a large amount of heat energy.

Eg: Petrol , Diesel , Kerosene.

5) IGNITION TEMPERATURE:

Ignition temperature is the lowest temperature on which a substance especially a fuel starts igniting or starts to undergo combustion.

Eg. Ignition temperature of

  • Petrol = 280° C
  • Diesel = 210° C
  • Kerosene = 220° C.

6) INFAMMABLE SUBSTANCE:

The substances possessing a low ignition temperature and are capable of undergoing rapid combustion are called inflammable substances. All fuels are highly inflammable.

Eg: Petrol , Diesel , Kerosene.

ADDITIONAL POINTS:

Combustion is of two types

  1. Complete combustion.
  2. Incomplete combustion.

Complete combustion gives Carbon - dioxide on heating and incomplete combustion gives Carbon-mono-oxide on heating.
