The radius, the perpendicular height and the slant height of a cone, together form a right angle triangle.

So, if the base is 12 cm, height is 16 cm, then slant height = \sqrt{12^2 + 16^2}
= \sqrt{144 + 256}
= \sqrt{400}
= 20 cm

So the slant height is 20 cm.
