if you have to express x in terms of k, you can do it. But if you have to find the values of x and k, you can't with the help of one equation only. It would be better if you posted actual problem so that correct steps might be decided.

7x^2 + 7x + k = 0

x^2 + x + k/7 = 0

x^2 + 2*x*1/2 + (1/2)^2 - 1/4 + k/7 = 0

(x + 1/2)^2 = 1/4 - k/7

x + 1/2 = +_√(1/4 - k/7)

x = -1/2 +_ √(1/4-k/7)

but I think this is not what you want.
