In ∆ADE and ∆ABC,

angle ADE = angle ABC

angle AED = angle ACB

therefore, ∆ADE ~∆ABC

so, area∆ADE/ area∆ABC = (AD)²/(AB)²

= 5²/(5+3)²

= 25/64

area ∆ADE = 25cm²

area ∆ABC = 64cm²

therefore ,

area of shaded region = area∆ABC - area∆ADE

= 64cm² - 25cm²

= 39cm²
