Question:-

A is now 9 years older than B. In 10 years, A will be twice as old as B was 10 years ago. Find their present ages.

Answer:-

Present age:-

Let the age of B be x years

Then age of A = (x + 9) years

10 years later:-

Age of A = x + 9 + 10 = (x + 19) years

Age of B = x + 10 = (x + 10) years

10 years ago:-

Age of A = x + 9 - 10 = (x - 1) years

Age of B = (x - 10) years

Given: In 10 years, A will be twice as old as B was 10 years ago

A/q

x + 19 = 2(x - 10)

=> x + 19 = 2x - 20

=> x = 39 years

Present ages:-

  • Age of A = x + 9 = 48 years
  • Age of B = x = 39 years
