All soils contain mineral particles, organic matter, water and air. The combinations of these determine the soil's properties – its texture, structure, porosity, chemistry andcolour.

Sandy soil has a high rate of percolation. This is the reason why they are dry all the time. They are not fertile as they can't hold water. Which explains that plants can not grow in them.
Clayey soil has lower percolation rate than sand. The water in them stays for very long time. This is why cros like paddy are grown in this type of soil as they need a lot of water.
