a +  \frac{1}{a}  = 5 \\  squaring \: on \:both \: sides \\  (a +  \frac{1}{a}) ^{2}   =  {5}^{2}  \\  or \:   {a}^{2}  + 2a \frac{1}{a}  + ( \frac{1}{a} )^{2}  = 25 \\ or \:  {a}^{2}   + ( \frac{1}{a} )^{2}  = 25 - 2 \\ or \: (a -  \frac{1}{a} ) ^{2} +2a\frac{1}{a}   = 23 \\ or \:( a -  \frac{1}{a} ) ^{2}  = 23 - 2 \\ or \: (a -  \frac{1}{a} ) =  \sqrt{21} \\ so \: (a -  \frac{1}{a} ) =  \sqrt{21}
