Given:

A circuit of 5 resistors is provided.

To find:

Equivalent resistance ?

Calculation:

In these type of complex circuits, first we need to apply potential drops along each resistances. Then , assign them in parallel or series.

(Refer to diagram for the potential drop).

After assigning the potential drops, draw the equivalent circuit.

  • You will observe that the simple circuit is actually a BALANCED WHEATSTONE BRIDGE.

  • So, the 20 ohm resistance will be neglected.

Equivalent resistance calculation:

  • In upper branch : R1 = 10 + 10 = 20 ohm

  • In lower branch : R2 = 10 + 10 = 20 ohm

 \therefore \:  \dfrac{1}{R_{net}} =  \dfrac{1}{R_{1}}  +  \dfrac{1}{R_{2}}

 \implies \:  \dfrac{1}{R_{net}} =  \dfrac{1}{20}  +  \dfrac{1}{20}

 \implies \:  \dfrac{1}{R_{net}} =  \dfrac{2}{20}

 \implies \:  \dfrac{1}{R_{net}} =  \dfrac{1}{10}

 \implies \:  R_{net} = 10 \: ohm

So, equivalent resistance is 10 ohm.
