Let the area of the small square be 1 sq unit

Then, the required ratio

 =  \frac{area \: of \: shadded \: portion}{area \: of \:the \:  whole \: figure}  \\  =  \frac{8 \: sq \: units}{16 \: sq \: units}   = \frac{1}{2}

.°. the ratio = 1:2

Note:

number of shaded squares = 8

Number of the whole square in the figure = 16.
