The student who use the lens of focal length 40cm is a concave lens and therefore the image formed is diminished and virtual.

whereas other students, who uses the lenses of -40cm is a convex lens and therefore the image formed is magnified, diminished, or of same size as the object according to the distance of the object from the lens and is a real image.
