Abacus can't actually be taught well without the student and teacher both being present but I will try to do my best. 1. Get an abacus. 2. Find the middle row..... there are dots present on that rod separating the upper beads from the lower beads... you have to find that middle dot and put your fore finger on that point. 3. The upper beads have a value of 5 and you will notice that the upper row only has one bead . So upper row, value 1 bead's value = 5 4. Below the rod, there are 4 beads in each vertical column each bead below the line has a value of one 5. When you make the beads touch the rod, then add up the values to find what number it represents... eg. If you have made one bead from the upper row( let's call it sky bead) touch the bar (by bar, I mean the horizontal bar that has the dot) and two beads from the lower rod, ( let call the lower beads the earth beads) touch the bar, then your value will be 5 + 1 + 1 =7. This is just the beginner stuff, but this is basically how you add numbers up to 9 Use your forefinger to push any beads down and your thumb to push any beads up. To represent any no. In its hundreds or thousands, the you continue moving to the left rods for each 0 you add to the no. This is how you represent 27.
