When they first tried to push the box friction opposed them so it was hard shells reduce friction so it was easier for them to push the box

well it's all because of friction .
because the applied force was not enough for the box so it took more effort . and when we fitted wheels it was easy to move the heavy box and that is because of ball bearings. ( ball bearing such as marbles ,wheels , balls etc... make the friction to decrease) .
