1 constriction -: The constriction in the thermometer is to prevent the mercury from dropping back to the bulb when the reading is being taken. It is easier for us to take reading. It prevents the thermometric substance (Mercury or Alcohol) from running back into the bulb.

2 bulb -: The bulb in a thermometer is filled with mercury. When the bulb is heated, mercury in the bulb expands and rises up in the capillary tube. The height of the mercury gives the reading of temperature.
