Answer:

Police ranks are a system of hierarchical relationships in police organizations.[1] The rank system defines authority and responsibility in a police organization. Police ranks, dependent on country, are similar to military ranks[2] in function and design due to policing in many countries developing from military organizations and operations,[3] such as in western Europe,[4][5] former Soviet countries,[6] and English-speaking countries.[7] Usually, uniforms denote the bearer's rank by particular insignia affixed to the uniforms.[8]

Rank is not only used to designate leadership, but to establish pay-grade as well.[9] As rank increases, pay-grade follows, but so does amount of responsibility.[10]

In India, the police force is one of the largest forces. Each state has its own police. Check out the article to find hierarchy in the police which is generally followed in all Indian states.

The police force in every state is empowered with the responsibility to maintain law and order and provide protection and safety to the citizens. As a federal democracy, in India power is divided between central and states governments. While there are several central forces, police forces are chiefly controlled by the state governments. In union territories of India, police forces are governed by the central government-appointed governors or administrators. Recruitment in the Indian police force is done at four different levels such as Constabulary, Upper Sub-ordinate, SPS (State level), and IPS (Central level). Hierarchy in police also follows a similar pattern. The general hierarchy remains the same for all dates with little variations in some states.
