The Greedy King

There was a king named Midas in Greece. He was very greedy. He loved gold more than anything else in the world. One day when Midas was counting his gold coins, an Angel said to Midas, "You are very rich." Midas said, "I am not rich at all. I have very little gold." The angel said, "You are not satisfied with that much of gold. How much more do you want?" The king said, "I want a boon as such that whatever I touch, it should be turned into gold." The angel said, "So be it! Whatever you touch from now on will turn into gold."

The next morning, when he touched a table and a chair, they turned into gold. He became ecstatic. When he was hungry and thirsty, his servant brought food and water for him. As soon as Midas touched the food and water, they turned into gold. Midas started crying. He was very hungry. When his daughter saw him crying, she decided to console him. As soon as she sat on his lap, she turned into a golden statue. Now, he wept very bitterly.

The Angle appeared again. The king requested the Angel to take his boon back. He said, "I do not want gold. Man can live without gold but he cannot live without his children, food or water." The Angel poured a little water into bowl and told him to sprinkle it on everything that has turned into gold. Midas sprinkled a few drops of water on his daughter, the table and the chair and on the food and water. Everything turned back to as they were before.
