1) Status of women in society: They were treated like objects. All the major decision of a woman's life was taken by first her father, then her husband and
a
lastly, her son. They were also not allowed to attend education and were married very early.
2) Plight of the widows: Widows weren't allowed to go to marriages or any kind of ceremonies. They were forced to eat only blad vegetables and wear only a white sari. Their head's were also shaved and they were sent to temple cities such as Mathura and Varanasi, where they had to earn their own living.
3) Sati: One of the most heinous acts of 19th century was Sati, which was burning of a widow with her dead husband in his funeral pyre.
So achievements:
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar: He started a movement in favor of widow remarriage and was instrumental in passing of widow remarriage act of 1856. His another remarkable achievement was starting of Bethune college with Bethune, which was a pioneer in the field of women education.
Jyotiba Phule: He and his wife Sabitri Phule started many schools in Maharashtra. He challenged the superiority of Bramhins and the authority of scriptures. Sabitri phule was the first female teacher in Maharashtra.
