(i) Taking LCM

WE GET

x² - 1 = 3 x

x² - 3x - 1 = 0

Using Quadratic Formula

a=1

b=3

c=−1

x=(−b±√b2−4ac)/2a

x=(−3±√32−4×1×−1)/2×1

x=(−3±√9−4)/2

x=(−3±√5)/2

∴ x = -3-√5/2  or x = -3 + √5/2

(ii) There are different ways to solve this equation

Multiply all the terms by 30(x+4)(x-7) to get

30(x-7)-30(x+4) = 11(x-7)(x+4)

-210-120 = 11(x2-3x-28)

-30 = x²-3x-28

x²-3x+2=0

(x-2)(x-1)=0

x=2 or x=1
