Bassanio uses an analepsis in order to persuade Antonio to lend him money so that he can woo his love, Portia. He uses a childhood anecdote of a shaft to this purpose. This was a smart decision on Bassanio’s part because he tries to emotionally manipulate Antonio by portraying himself as a young boy.
Antonio on the other hand gets easily manipulated. He is ready to lend money to Bassanio even though he has a bad history with “debt.” Antonio hyperbolically professes his love for Bassanio. “And out of doubt you do me now more wrong In making question of my uttermost Than if you had made waste of all I have” is one of the extreme methods he uses to profess his love. He also states that “his purse, person, and, extremest means” are all available to Bassanio. Antonio comes off as the loving side of this relationship.
