Let the side of the square be 'x'.

We know that Area = x^2.

Given that side of a square is increased by 20%.

=> Length of each side = x + 20% of x = 120x/100 = (6/5)x

New area = (6x/5)^2 = (36x^2/25)

Now,

Increase in area = (36x^2/25) - x^2

                           = (36x^2 - 25x^2)/25

                           = 11x^2/25

So, the % increase in area = (11x^2/25) * (100/x^2)

= > 1100/25

= > 44.

Therefore, Area is increased by 44%.

Hope this helps!
