Oceanic Plateaus

Oceanic plateaus are large flat-topped plateaus on the seafloor composed largely of mafic volcanic and intrusive rocks (Coffin and Eldholm, 1994). They are generally capped with a thin veneer of deep-sea sediments and typically rise 2 km or more above the seafloor. Next to basalts and associated intrusive rocks produced at ocean ridges, oceanic plateaus are the largest volumes of mafic igneous rocks at the Earth's surface. The magmas in these plateaus, with their continental equivalents known as flood basalts, appear to be produced in hotspots caused by mantle plumes.
