"The Horla" (French: Le Horla) is a 1887 short repulsiveness story written in the style of a diary by the French essayist Guy de Maupassant, after an underlying, a lot shorter adaptation distributed in the paper Gil Blas, October 26, 1886.
American frightfulness author H. P. Lovecraft, in his review "Extraordinary Horror in Literature" (1927), gives his own translation of the story:
Relating the approach in France of an imperceptible being who lives on water and milk, influences the psyches of others, and is by all accounts the vanguard of a swarm of additional earthbound creatures touched base on earth to oppress and overpower humankind, this strained story is maybe without friend in its specific office.
