x^2 + 1/x^2 = 51

On subtracting 2 from both sides, we get

=> x^2 + 1/x^2 - 2 = 51 - 2

=> x^2 + 1/x^2 - 2(x)(1/x) = 49

=> (x-1/x)^2 = 49

=> x - 1/x = 7
