Let the speed of the steamer be 'x'.

Given that steamer goes downstream in 9 hours.

Given that Speed of stream = 1 km/hr.

Downstream speed = 9(x + 1) km/hr.    ------ (1)

Given that streamer goes downstream in 10 hours.

Given that speed of stream = 1 km/hr.

Upstream speed = 10(x - 1).    ------- (2)

On solving (1) & (2), we get

= > 9(x + 1) = 10(x - 1)

= > 9x + 9 = 10x - 10

= > 9x - 10x = -10 - 9

= > x = 19

Now,

Distance between the ports :

= > 10(19 - 1)

= > 10(18)

= > 180 km/hr.

Therefore,

The speed of the steamer = 8.

The distance between the ports = 180 km/hr.
