Let, the present age of the man be x.

Now, age after 9 years = x+9
And age 33 years ago = x-33

Now, we have,
(x - 33)^2 = x+9
Or, x^2 - 66x + 1089 = x + 9
Or, x^2 - 67x + 1080 = 0
Or, x^2 - 40x - 27x + 1080 = 0
Or, x(x - 40) - 27 (x - 40) = 0
Or, ( x - 40) ( x - 27) = 0.
Or, x = 40,27

Here, as per the question, 27 is not acceptable as if the age is taken 33 years ago, then it becomes negative.

Thus, x = 40.

Hence, present age of the man is 40 years.
