Explanation:

as it is given that the sound of the jet makes 60 degree with horizontal from east to west,

make a right angled triangle with 30 60 and 90 degree.

this represents the velocity vectors

now the hypotenuse of this triangle will be the velocity of sound 'c'.

as we know costheta= adajacent(I.e the horizontal component of the triangle)/hypotenuse

so cos60=jet speed/c

so 0.5c=jet speed

the horizontal component of the vector triangle is jet speed.
